Natural Habitat

These owls thrive in almost any environment that offers trees for cover and cavities for nesting, successfully inhabiting deep forests, suburban backyards, and even city parks.

Where I'm Found

Found throughout Eastern North America, their vast range stretches from the Canadian border all the way down to Mexico and the Florida Keys.

What I Eat

As highly opportunistic nocturnal predators, their diet consists mainly of large insects, crayfish, and earthworms, though they frequently hunt small rodents like mice and even other small birds.

How Long I Live

Life in the wild is challenging, with most individuals living only 3 to 7 years due to natural predation, whereas in human care, they can live a remarkably long life of up to 20 years.

Fun Facts
  • Master of Disguise: They occur in two distinct color morphs—rufous (red) and gray—which allows them to blend seamlessly against different types of tree bark.
  • Not a Hoot: Unlike the classic owl call, they produce a haunting trill or a descending whinny that sounds surprisingly like a miniature horse.
  • Tiny but Tough: Standing only 6 to 10 inches tall, they are fearless hunters known to tackle prey larger than themselves.
