Natural Habitat

Natural Habitat

In the wild, Silver Pheasants are primarily montane forest dwellers. They are highly adaptable but show a strong preference for high-altitude environments, typically ranging from 600 to 2,100 meters above sea level.

  • Primary Biomes: Subtropical evergreen forests, dense bamboo thickets, and coniferous forests.
  • Ecological Niche: They prefer areas with thick undergrowth for cover but require open forest floors for foraging.
  • Climate: They are well-suited for cooler, damp mountain climates, which explains why they don’t mind your Delaware winters as much as some of your other residents.
Where I'm Found

Natural Range & Habitat

The Silver Pheasant (Lophura nycthemera) is native to Mainland Southeast Asia and Southern/Eastern China. Its expansive wild distribution includes:

  • China: Found from Sichuan and Yunnan east to Fujian, including Hainan Island.
  • Indochina: Native to Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

These are primarily montane birds, thriving in subtropical evergreen forests, bamboo thickets, and dense mountain scrub at elevations between 600 and 2,000 meters.

What I Eat

Diet & Nutrition

Silver Pheasants are omnivorous foragers. They spend the majority of their daylight hours scratching through leaf litter on the forest floor, much like a domestic chicken, searching for a wide variety of food sources.

The Wild Menu:

  • Vegetation: Bamboo shoots, ferns, seeds, fallen fruits, and various berries.
  • Insects: Termites, ants, beetles, and larvae found in the soil.
  • Small Vertebrates: They are opportunistic and will occasionally take small lizards or frogs if the chance arises.

Zoo Note: While they forage naturally, their captive diet is supplemented with high-quality game bird pellets to ensure they maintain that striking plumage.

How Long I Live

Lifespan

In the Wild: Typically 8 to 10 years. Predation, habitat loss, and environmental stressors usually keep their wild lifespan significantly shorter than those in managed care.

In Captivity: Often 15 to 20 years. With a stable diet, protection from predators, and veterinary care, Silver Pheasants are known to be quite long-lived among game birds.

Fun Facts
  • Fun Fact: They have those bright red legs and faces that make them look like they’ve spent too much time in the Delaware sun without SPF.
