Global. Domesticated worldwide, with over 300 distinct breeds adapted to climates ranging from the sub-Saharan desert to the Swiss Alps.
What I Eat
Goats are strict browsers, not grazers. They prefer eating at eye level or above rather than eating grass off the ground.
- Wild: A diverse mix of woody shrubs, vines, tree leaves, and brambles. They often consume plants poisonous to other animals, such as poison ivy and oak.
- Zoo: High-quality hay, goat chow (pelleted grain), and fresh browse (branches and leaves) cut by keepers.
How Long I Live
- Average: 15 – 18 years
- Geriatric: Well-cared-for individuals can occasionally reach 20+ years.
Fun Facts
- Rectangular Pupils: Their pupils are horizontal slits that rotate to stay level with the ground, giving them a 320-degree field of vision to spot predators while grazing.
- The Tin Can Myth: They do not eat tin cans. They are actually picky eaters but are intensely curious and investigate new objects by nibbling them to test the texture.
- Social Hierarchy: Goats establish a strict “pecking order” (or “bunting order”) within the herd, often led by a matriarch (queen).
