Miniature Donkey

Domesticated worldwide. Their wild ancestors, the African Wild Ass, were originally native to the rugged deserts of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

They are incredibly efficient grazers adapted to survive on sparse, low-quality vegetation.

• Natural Diet: Fibrous grasses, shrubs, and desert plants.
• Zoo: Primarily grass hay. Because they metabolize food so efficiently, they are prone to obesity, so grain and rich treats are strictly limited compared to other equines.

• Average: 25 – 35 years
• Maximum: Some have lived into their 40s with excellent care.

• The Legend: Most donkeys possess a dark stripe of fur down their back and across their shoulders, known as the “Nuval Cross” or dorsal cross.
• Not Stubborn, Just Smart: Their reputation for stubbornness is actually self-preservation. Unlike horses (who flee in panic), donkeys freeze to assess a threat before moving.
• Height Limit: To be registered as a true Miniature Mediterranean Donkey, they must stand under 36 inches at the withers (shoulder).
